Chemotherapy refers to use of antineoplastic drugs to treat cancer in popular usage and also use of a combination of drugs into a cytotoxic homogeneous treatment option. The term refers to antibacterial chemotherapy or antibiotics in non-oncological use. In 1909 a compound that is arseniccalled arsphenamine was the first modern chemotherapeutic agent, discovered by Paul Ehrlich. It was used in the treatment of syphilis. Penicillin discovered by Alexander Fleming and sulfonamides discovered by Domagk later followed this discovery.

Cancer cells divide rapidly which is one of the main properties of most cancer cells, and most commonly chemotherapy acts by killing these cancer cells. Chemotherapy also harms cells that rapidly divide in normal circumstances, for example cells in the hair follicles, digestive tract, and cells in the marrow of the bones . All this results in the alopecia or hair loss, mucositis or inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract and myelosuppression or the decreased production of blood cells, which are the most common chemotherapy side effects.

Cytostatic chemotherapy agents are used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. These are suppressants for transplant rejections, rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, Polymyositis, Dermatomyositis, and multi sclerosis. There are also some new anticancer drugs which act directly against the abnormal proteins in cancer cells, through a process termed as targeted therapy.

Adverse effects of chemotherapy:

Depending on the type of medications used, chemotherapeutic techniques have a range of side effects. Fast dividing cells of the body are mainly affected by the most common medications. Even the cells lining the intestines, stomach, and mouth as well as the blood cells are affected. There are a number of side effects of chemotherapy.

A cancer patient might already be tired from cancer related fatigue and the treatment too can be physically exhausting for the patient. Mild to severe anemia may be produced. To mitigate anemia, treatments include intake of iron supplements, blood transfusions and erythropoietin hormones to boost production of blood.

Chemotherapy side effects also involve reducing the number of platelets in the blood, which is likely to also reduce with medications that rapidly kill blood cells or dividing cells. This can result in bleeding and bruises. Through platelet transfusions, very low platelet count may be boosted. To allow platelet counts to recover, sometimes chemotherapy treatments are postponed.

Potentially fatal infections are a result of depression of the immune system. Most of the infections are due to naturally occurring microorganisms present in the skin and gut of the patient, although patients are encouraged to avoid sick people, wash their hands and take other infection reducing steps. Systemic infections manifest such as shingles, localized outbreaks and sepsis. Sometimes because the immune system is suppressed to critically low levels, chemotherapy treatments are postponed.

Dramatic hair loss is caused by some medications that kill rapidly dividing cells whereas other medications cause the hair to thin out. After the last treatment the hair starts growing back after a few weeks because the medications have temporary effect. Sometimes the hair tends to curl and such a condition is called the ‘chemo perm’ At times with resultant symptoms damage to specific organs may occur. Liver damage or hepatotoxity, damage to the inner ear or Ototoxicity which produces vertigo, heart damage or cardiotoxicity , and kidney damage or nephrotoxicity are some developments.

Gastrointestinal distress:

Chemotherapeutic medications that kill fast dividing cells have common chemotherapy side effects like vomiting, nausea and can also manifest with the onslaught of constipation or diarrhea. Because of gastrointestinal damage or when the patient keeps vomiting frequently, dehydration and malnutrition can result when the patient does not drink or eat enough. Also in an effort to allay heartburn or nausea if the patient eats too much, this can result in occasional weight gain or even rapid weight loss. Some steroid medications also cause weight gain. With antiemetic drugs, these chemotherapy side effects can frequently be eliminated or eliminated. Self care measures are recommended, such as drinking clear liquids or ginger tea and eating frequent small meals. This temporary effect resolves frequently withn a week after completing the treatment.

Myelosuppression and immunosuppression:

Chemotherapy side effects also involve depression of the immune system which is caused by virtually all chemotherapeutic regimens. This results in decrease in platelets, red blood cells, white blood cells and often paralysis of the bone marrow. When the platelets and red blood cells decrease the counts are better with blood transfusion. In severe myelosuppression all the bone marrow stem cells get destroyed. It becomes necessary to resort to autologous or allogenic bone marrow transplants. In the case of Inallogenic bone marrow transplant, the source is the donor, and in autologous bone marrow transplant, before the treatment the cells removed from the patient and then re-injected later. Because of this interference with bone marrow, some patients develop many other diseases. In the recent times, the use of emetogenic chemotherapy and better antiemetics has reduced.

To kill growing cancer cells many anticancer drugs are used. Cancer cells may grow as well as divide more rapidly than the normal cells. Cancer chemotherapy side effects involve affecting certain healthy, normal cells which multiply quickly. A lot of side effects are cause due to this damage to normal cells. Blood cells in the hair follicles, reproductive system including the sexual organs, cells in the digestive tract like the esophagus, intestines, stomach and mouth, blood cells forming in the bone marrow could be the most likely fast growing normal cells that can be affected by chemotherapy.

Discuss with your doctor:

Some of the cells of vital organs such as the nervous system, lungs, bladder, kidney and heart can be affected by anticancer drugs. There could be just a few side effects or there may be no side effects at all. Depending on the dose of chemotherapy and the type of dose, the body reacts differently. The different kinds of cancer chemotherapy side effects and the severity of the side effects are consistently monitored. Doctors usually discuss the side effects that you are most likely to develop with the drugs being prescribed, before starting the chemotherapy.

The doctor usually asks the patient to sign a consent form before starting the treatment. He or she will then be given all the facts about the treatment, including the type of drugs that will be administered, as well as their side effects before signing the consent form.

Side effects – how long do they last:

Most of the cancer chemotherapy side effects gradually go away after the treatment is over, so normal cells usually recover when chemotherapy is over. After the treatment ends the healthy cells have a chance to grow normally. The kind of chemotherapy you have been taking including your overall health are the main factors that determine the time you will take to get over the side effects. Very often no serious long term problems are faced by patients undergoing chemotherapy. But sometimes on some occasions permanent damage can be caused to reproductive organs, kidneys, nerves, lungs, heart and other organs because of chemotherapy. Sometimes there are delayed effects such as development of a secondary cancer which shows up many years later, due to certain types of chemotherapy.

It is important to ask the doctors about the chances of any long term serious effect which can result from the chemotherapy treatment you are receiving. Once you know about the immediate threat of your condition, remember to address your concerns with the threat. Cancer chemotherapy side effects must be measured against the ability of the treatment to destroy cancer, but besides that the side effects of chemotherapy can be very unpleasant. Some of the side effects such as nausea can be prevented by medicines. Many of the cancer patients get discouraged about receiving chemotherapy due to the side effects and the length of time taken for the treatment. It is always advisable to talk to the doctor if this happens with you. To reduce the side effects, deal with them better and to make side effects easier, doctors suggest different ways to cope.

There are common cancer chemotherapy side effects like hair loss, fatigue, vomiting, nausea, pain, radiation recall, fluid retention anemia, diarrhea, infection, constipation, nerve disorders, muscle disorders, problems with blood clotting, throat, gum and mouth problems, effects on skin and nails, flu like symptoms and bladder and kidney disorders.

Effects of chemotherapy on lifestyle:

As far as treatment of cancer is concerned, there is a combination of different drugs administered to the cancer patient at different levels. In other words chemotherapy is a systemic treatment of cancer. Drugs can be administered orally or intravenously. Rapidly dividing cells which include cancer cells and very unfortunately some normal cells are killed by those antineoplastic drugs. Some of the normal cells like the cells in the skin , the bowels, hair follicles, the stomach, mouth and cells in the blood can get affected with the antineoplastic drugs. Sometimes, the side effects of chemotherapy can last a lifetime. There are always cancer chemotherapy side effects due to the damage of healthy cells.

There are some other adverse effects reported by individuals undergoing chemotherapy treatment. These adverse effects include, lack of appetite, change in sleeping habits of the individual, irritation in the mouth, decreased sexual desire, fatigue, loss of hearing, problems with nails, constipation, disorders of the skin, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea, loss of hair, infertility and a range of emotional problems. The risk of developing other forms of cancer as well as risk of heart disease also increases due to chemotherapy. Chemotherapy has a range of side effects depending on the type of medication used. Nevertheless, this killer ailment needs to be dealt with in the most appropriate manner and one such definition of appropriate in this situation is called chemo!

Treating Breast Cancer with Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is often a necessary method of treating your breast cancer. It is a disease that involves cells found within your body that are rapidly growing and dividing. In normal cells, this process also happens. That is the way that your body replenishes itself as well as repairs itself. Yet, with cancer cells, the rate of division is much faster and that means that cancer cells spread much faster than normal cells do. The differences in cancer cells and normal cells are many, but this may be a good thing for chemotherapy.

What Is Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy is a method of treating your cancer cells with very powerful drugs that kill them. Cancer chemotherapy is a necessary part of fighting off the disease. But, it is very targeted so that only the location where the cancer has been found, and surrounding areas are targeted. By doing this, doctors can concentrate the amount of medications used to stop the growth and spread of cancer. As cancer spreads it destroys the tissue it is found on, no matter if this is an organ or something else. This can cause you to die if it is not treated. The good news is that chemotherapy is an effective method of treatment in many patients.

Chemotherapy treatment is used in several ways for those suffering from breast cancer. First, it will be used prior to having surgery. Surgery is often a necessary tool for doctors to use to remove as much of the cancer growth as possible. Doing so is the only way to slow the growth enough to stop it. Prior to having surgery, breast cancer chemotherapy works by shrinking the size of the tumor. While it cannot get rid of it completely, it can definitely shrink the size quite a bit.

At this point, after the surgery takes place, it becomes necessary to again use chemotherapy in the area that the cancer was found. This will help to reduce the chances of the remaining cancer cells from spreading or from returning. If the cancer does return down the road, chemotherapy treatment will be used again to help stop the growth again. This is often done after screening for cancer has shown that the cancer growth has returned. Many times, doctors do not need to do surgery for cancer again because the chemotherapy can target the smaller amounts of cancer cells.

Breast cancer chemotherapy is very helpful in that it works specifically on the cells in your body that are growing and multiplying. While all the cells in the region it is being targeted at will likely be dividing, cancer cells do this much faster. That means that more of the cancer can be killed off by the medication. Additionally, normal cells are able to repair the damage that chemotherapy treatment does to them. Cancer cells are unable to repair such damage, which is why this type of treatment is so effective at treating breast cancer.

Anyone suffering from breast cancer will likely begin talking with their doctors about possible breast cancer treatment options. In doing so, it is likely that chemotherapy will be mentioned. That is because this method of treating cancer is perhaps the most effective way to stop the growth. It is most effective when the cancer has been caught early enough, though it can help at many stages in the process. Your doctor will talk to you about your specific case as well as how effective chemotherapy treatment can be on its own. Even if you need surgery it is important to realize that you may also need chemotherapy treatment as the two work hand in hand to rid your body of the disease.

Treatment for Cancer and Chemotherapy

Cancer chemotherapy is a method of curing the disease of cancer. There are several different ways that doctors treat cancer, but chemotherapy is one of the most common of those methods. That is because in the wide range of different types of chemotherapy that is found in the body, it becomes necessary for doctors to find some type of method of stopping the cells from growing, dividing and therefore spreading. Chemotherapy treatments work to accomplish this goal very well.

Understanding what chemotherapy is happens to be very important for any patient that may be going through this process. What is chemotherapy? The words themselves actually mean “drug treatment” which sounds very vague. In truth, it is a method of treating cancer in which the medications and procedure will kill cells with a cytotoxic drug. These drugs may be a combination of other drugs, or they may just be one drug. There are many drugs that are used in this manner (currently 70 of them) that can be very helpful in fighting off cancer growth. Doctors will determine the best drug choice for you, based on a number of factors.

Those factors include the type of cancer that you have as well as the location of the cancer in your body (usually the location where the cancer was first found.) Additionally, doctors must take into consideration the cancer cells themselves and often need to study them to be sure of their overall effect. Added to this is the fact that doctors must consider if the cancer has spread or is likely to spread. All of these factors together must be considered for doctors to make the decision on which chemotherapy drugs can be used in your body for your specific needs.

From this point, cancer chemotherapy enters the realm of how the chemotherapy is used. There are several options here, too, that doctors will select from. It can be done in addition to other treatments including radiotherapy, through surgery, biological therapy as well as hormone therapy. To treat cancer, your doctor may need to employ several of these methods to get the end results that you should have. Sometimes, patients will need an additional dosage of the drug used in chemotherapy. This is called a high dose of chemotherapy. In this situation, a drip infusion is given to you of stem cells afterwards to provide your body with necessary resources it may lose in the chemotherapy process.

Chemotherapy treatment is used in various types of cancer. It is often directed at the specific location where the cancer has been found. For example, it may be used for as breast cancer chemotherapy and in these situations, the chemotherapy drugs and methods are concentrated on the breast region because this is wehre the cancer has been found. There is no doubt that chemotherapy treatments must be tailored to the individual themselves, which often sets you up for questions and a trial and error period where doctors are unsure about what methods for treating cancer will work for you.

Cancer chemotherapy is a very harsh sentence. Although the cancer can be wiped out by this type of treatment when effective, there are many harsh side effects and prolonged effects that you will need to work through and sometimes live with. The least of these is chemotherapy nausea which really can be one of the worst experiences that you have. As you work with your doctor to determine the best course of action for treating your disease, take some time to learn about the medications included in chemotherapy. You may be surprised by the fact that you can overcome this cancer through the use of such medications.

Stem Cell Treatments and High Dose

This is a process by which doctors use very high amounts of chemotherapy in the hope of trying to bring cancer cells in line and destroy them. As cancer spreads through various areas of the body, it becomes very important for doctors to target those areas to insure that the disease does not spread further. Some cancers are harder to fight and sometimes standard methods of using chemotherapy are not able to work well. If your doctor recommends high dose chemotherapy with bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation, this is perhaps an aggressive way to fight the condition.

Why It Is Difficult?

All types of cancer chemotherapy do cause a number of side effects. Some patients will face more than others. The level of intensity of those drug interactions with your body can be varied as well. Yet, with high doses of chemotherapy, in this manner, the effects of chemotherapy are often much more monumental. Yet, there are more risks to be had and doctors must weigh the good effects against the risks that need to be taken to get to that point. Ask your doctor to tell you more about how this is happening.

In high dose chemotherapy, or sometimes radiation therapy, the effect of the chemotherapy treatment is essential. In this process, not only does the chemotherapy method kill off the cancer cells, but it can also kill the blood making stem cells in your body’s bone marrow. When this happens, the body’s white blood cell count is drastically lowered; in turn this can lead to the easy susceptibility of patients to contract severe infections. Sometimes, these infections can be fatal. Additionally, the process causes people to bleed easily which can also be fatal to the patient.

Doctors have developed a method to overcome these risks with high dose chemotherapy. They will first remove some of the stem cells from the patient’s body, usually from the peripheral blood (which is the blood circulating through your body) or from the bone marrow itself. Then, they will administer the high dose chemotherapy treatment. Once that process has been done and the chemotherapy is running its course, doctors will then return the stem cells back into the body through your veins. The cells naturally find their way into the bone marrow and then reestablish their existence there. When this happens, the body is able to get back to making new blood cells to replenish those lost through chemotherapy.

Unfortunately, there is still a lot of research that needs to be done on high dose chemotherapy. Doctors are not sure why some cancers do not react any better to this method than to others. More so, some cancers seem to be unaffected by the high doses even with the application of stem cells afterwards. Additionally troubling for many patients is the fact that this procedure will lead to advanced complications in terms of side effects. They may find that extremes are faced which are painful and often debilitating for some time.

As with all chemotherapy treatments, this treatment is one option that doctors have. It is only used in the most advanced cases of cancer and often only when there is no other medication method to improve the situation. It does not always help and should not be considered in some situations because of the additional risks placed on the patient.

Talk to your doctor about high dose chemotherapy if you are suffering from advanced stages of cancer. In some situations, there is hope in improving the condition in this manner. Still, doctors are likely to need more research before they can use this method readily.

Options Doctors Have for Lung Cancer

Lung cancer chemotherapy is often administered to patients that are suffering from any stage of lung cancer. As one of the deadliest forms of cancer, and the leading cancer death causing type, it is always important for doctors to be given as much of an opportunity to treat the condition as possible.

Chemotherapy is a method of getting rid of the cancer cells from within the body that are dividing and growing there. There are several different methods of fighting cancer in the lungs including a wide range of chemotherapy options made up of a variety of drugs. Your doctor will determine which the best option for your condition is.

Most of the time, doctors will treat lung cancer first through surgery, whenever possible. This method will allow the doctors to remove any tissue from the lung that has been infected with cancer, therefore removing the cancer from the body. This type of surgery can only be done at certain stages of lung cancer because of the risks. The surgery’s goal is to remove the cancerous tumor growth found in the lungs. Some tumors, though, can not be removed through surgery. Often it is because of the size of the tumor or its location that makes it impossible to remove.

Doctors may then pursue other methods of killing the cancer cells including radiation therapy. This is a form of x-ray energy at a very high level that is used directly onto the cancer cells. It will kill them. Most often, it is done alongside other treatments including surgery and chemotherapy. This method is helpful at relieving pain as well as removing anything blocking your airways. Doctors often couple this treatment option with that of chemotherapy because together they have a larger opportunity of getting rid of the cancer cells.

Lung cancer chemotherapy is almost always used even when surgery and radiation therapy are used as well. Chemotherapy is simply a term that is used to refer to the many different types of cancer fighting drugs that are administered to you. Most often, these drugs will be injected into the body through a vein or sometimes they will be given through a catheter. This is a tube that is placed into a large vein in your body and is kept there until it is no longer needed. Some forms of chemotherapy drugs can be taken as a pill, but this is not always an option because some medications simply will not work in this manner.

When lung cancer chemotherapy is administered, patients often will feel some side effects due to the body’s ability to deal with the medications. Because there are different types of chemotherapy available, doctors will need to choose the right one. Each type has its own set of chemotherapy side effects that you could face, though some patients do not have any.

Doctors will work on providing you with the highest quality of medications available to fight your lung cancer. Unfortunately, it may be that those amounts of limited in what they can do for you because of the type of the stage of cancer that you have. Lung cancer does spread quickly. Sometimes doctors will take advantage of high dose chemotherapy which uses a large amount of drugs that can do serious damage to your body in turn.

Talk with your doctor about your risk factors as well as your likelihood of getting rid of cancer. Through the use of medications like these, stopping cancer from continuing is possible. The highest rate of success is for patients that have early detection. Therefore, if you could be suffering, seek out help as soon as possible.

Is Oral Chemotherapy An Option?

Oral chemotherapy is a method of treating chemotherapy in which the chemotherapy drugs are taken by mouth, usually in the form of a tablet or pill. This is perhaps the easiest way to receive chemotherapy treatments because the medication does not have to enter the body through a vein, injections, drips or even more invasive procedures. Not all patients are able to have this type of treatment, though. It is up to your doctor to determine if this is the best way for you to get chemotherapy help or if you do need other methods.

What You Need To Know?

If you will be taking oral chemotherapy treatments, that means that you are taking a very specific type of medication that is very powerful and very much a part of your healing process. You may need to monitor yourself and insure that you are taking the medication as your doctor directs. It is essential to follow the appropriate scheduling, dosage amounts any other important considerations as per the directions your doctor or your nurse will give to you at the time of prescribing these medications to you.

Before you leave the doctor’s office, you need to have a few things understood:

You should know when to take the chemotherapy pills or capsules. This means time, day, as well as how often.

Doctors will often point out the necessary means of taking them. For example, some of these medications must be taken on an empty stomach, but others will require that you take them with food. This will interact with the way that they are used if you do not take them correctly.

Learn how to keep them safe in your home. Some of these oral medications need to be kept in your refrigerator at a certain temperature. Because they are so powerful, you should be sure that they are stored someplace locked and where no child can get to them.

Handling these medications with care. Those helping cancer patients take chemotherapy drugs like this should wear gloves because of just how powerful these medications are.

Follow any other direction given to you by your nurse prior to leaving the hospital.

Is Your Drug Available Like This?

Unfortunately, not many of the chemotherapy medications can be taken as an oral product. Some are unable to be taken like this because they can not be absorbed into your body through the digestive symptom. In other cases, the medications may become destroyed by the acid that is in your body’s stomach. Still others need to be given in larger doses to be effective and those doses may not be possible to take in a pill format.

As with all chemotherapy treatments, tablets can leave you with side effects of cancer medications. This may include chemotherapy hair loss, nausea, fatigue and pain. Talk to your doctor about the availability of medications to help counteract these side effects. Doctors often have the necessary medications available to help stop these side effects or to limit how severe they can be. Additionally, follow a good chemotherapy diet so that your body is getting the necessary nutrients it needs to fight off the cancer cells and to get back to a health level as soon as possible.

Since most doctors do want to make taking cancer chemotherapy treatments as easy as possible, they will prescribe for you those medications that can be taken orally, if available. If you are unsure about this, ask your doctor for their recommendations. Additionally, you should learn as much as you can about how to prepare yourself for chemotherapy as well as the many side effects that you may face.

Chemotherapy Types

There are many types of chemotherapy that you could be told will be used to help treat your cancer. Ultimately, your doctor will determine the best treatment for you based on a couple of specific considerations. First, they need to understand your cancer well enough, which means knowing where it is located, what type it is, what stage it is in as well as where the location of tumors are. From here, they will find the most appropriate treatment plan for you, which most often include some form of chemotherapy. With the help of other treatment means, including radiation therapy and surgery, doctors can isolate, kill as well as remove cancer cells from your body so that you go into remission.

Types Of Cancer

There are many types of cancer and doctors must work to determine which the best option for your individual case is. Breast cancer chemotherapy is much different than lung cancer chemotherapy, for example. They will require different techniques, different aggression plans as well as different chemotherapy drugs to treat them. Many times, doctors must use a combination of medications within the chemotherapy to accomplish the necessary goals of curing your cancer.

Types Of Chemotherapy Drugs

There are also several types of chemotherapy drugs, based on the way that they are used and the reactions they have. The drugs are divided into groups based on the way that they work within the cancer cell (the way that chemical substances in the cancer react to them.) Additionally, they are divided by what cellular processes the drug interacts with and the drug affects. By knowing the different ways that these drugs work, and knowing what you need them to accomplish, doctors can get the best results from the chemotherapy treatment that they administer.

Here are few of the different types of chemotherapy drugs you may hear about.

Alkylating Agents: This type of drug works to damage the DNA within the cancer cell. When it does this, it does not allow the cancer cell to reproduce. They work in all phases of cancer. They work well against chronic leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, non Hodgkin lymphoma, lung cancer, breast cancer and several other types.

Nitrosoureas: This type of chemotherapy drug works similar to that of Alkylating drugs. These will interfere with the enzymes that work in the cell to copy and repair DNA. They are able to work in various stages of cancer. They work well in brain tumors because of their rare ability to travel from the blood into the brain. They also treat other forms of cancer.

Antimetabolites: DNA and RNA growth in cells is damaged or interfered with when these types of drugs are used. They work best in the S phase of the cancer and can be used to treat breast cancer, ovary cancer, gastrointestinal tract cancers, as well as leukemia.

Anthracyclines and Related Medications: These are antibiotics that fight against the tumor using enzymes that are necessary for DNA replication. They work in all stages of cancer. They can be used in a wide range of cancers. These drugs, though, are limited because over time they can damage heart muscles.

Many of these drugs can be taken as oral chemotherapy, injected into veins, or taking through other methods as necessary.

Doctors work to determine the best type of chemotherapy for you. With many types of chemotherapy drugs to choose from, doctors do have many options. More so, new cancer curing drugs are always coming on the market. As they do, you may have more chances to fight the cancers you are facing. If you have questions about how the drugs you are taking work, your doctor can help.

Chemotherapy Side Effects such as Nausea

Chemotherapy nausea is one of many different side effects that cancer patients are likely to face. The side effects of chemotherapy often can cause the individual a lot of discomfort, a feeling of being sick all the time and being very tired continuously. The drugs that you must take to get rid of the cancer you are facing cause these things. Those drugs are often very powerful, as they need to kill off the cancer cells within the body quickly. For many people, getting over the nausea is also important and doctors can help with medications that help.

What Is This?

Chemotherapy nausea is a term used to describe the feeling of being sick. You may feel like you are going to vomit or that you are going to get sick, but in fact you do not throw up. Those that feel like this often have symptoms such as a faster heart rate, more saliva than what is usually, feel dizzy or unable to focus, and they are cold and clammy. Many times, you do not want to eat and the thought of doing so may be awful. This feeling is caused by the body’s reaction to medications. The stomach muscles are usually contracting which causes the food or other substances in your stomach to feel as if they are going to come back up. Some people will retch, which means that they will try to throw up but nothing comes up.

Why Does This Happen?

There are several reasons why you may get sick. The cause of sickness during chemotherapy treatment is different for each person based on your body’s reaction to medications. The body is working like this to get rid of the substances that you have consumed that it does not want there. Your brain controls this function and tells your stomach to contract to remove whatever has been consumed. You actually have an area of your brain known as the vomiting center where this is controlled.

That area of your body is triggered by the response from other areas of the body. For example, your senses of taste and smell, your emotions including anxiousness, and your stomach all react to the chemotherapy drugs and in turn send a signal to your brain that this is not making you feel good. Additionally, those chemotherapy medications release a number of different chemicals into your body which work as neurotransmitters. They cause another signal to be alerted to the brain that something is wrong.

Getting Through Chemotherapy Sickness

The good news is that the chemotherapy sickness that you are feeling is not going to last. For most people, it lasts through chemotherapy cycles and then will fade as the medications are slowly removed from your system. Another benefit to consider is talking to your doctor about anti nausea medications which are widely available and usually can be taken to help reduce this uncontrollable pain and discomfort that you feel. They work for most people, at least to some degree of doing so.

Nausea during chemotherapy is a normal reaction to the drugs. Nevertheless, for most people, the worry and the feeling together can be enough to really cause you to be exhausted. You will want to get more rest and try to drink enough fluids. Doctors can help with other chemotherapy side effects as well. For example chemotherapy hair loss, pain in the mouth or other areas as well as appetite control are all things that your doctor can offer help with. These treatments need to be provided so that you can continue to improve your overall health and well being.

Chemotherapy Side Effects such as Hair-Loss

Chemotherapy hair loss is common among those that are suffering with this cancer treatment. Chemotherapy is a necessary tool for fighting off cancer, and while it comes with many harmful side effects that really leave people fighting for their healthy, it is perhaps the only way to treat some forms of cancer. Because chemotherapy uses a number of different drugs to destroy the cancer cells, these drugs often have side effects such as hair loss. The medications are very harsh and they often work to kill off cancer cells. Therefore, they need to be harsh in order to work for you.

The effects of chemotherapy are harsh in a number of ways. The type of side effects you experience will be based, at least in part, on the type of drugs given to you, the course that the drugs are presented in as well as the overall health that you have before the medication begins. Chemotherapy’s side effects can include any of the following side effects:

Nausea and vomiting are the most common chemotherapy side effects that you are likely to have to deal with

Hair loss happens in some types of chemotherapy treatment

Fatigue is usually associated with all types of chemotherapy treatment

Bruising and bleeding problems, as many of the drugs used to treat cancer will cause you to become anemic

Infection risks increase due to the overall destruction of those illness fighting cells within your body which can be harmed during chemotherapy

You may notice weight changes and appetite changes that will cause you to lose weight

Problems with the intestines are common

Your mouth may hurt including a sore mouth, problems with your gums as well as pain in your throat

You may have some nerve and muscle problems for some time until the treatments wear off.

These are just some of the most common side effects faced by cancer patients who are getting chemotherapy treatment. There are ways to improve your overall health and well being through. The good news is that many of these situations can be repaired with the help of a healthy diet, including the chemotherapy diet your doctor recommends, improved care for yourself as well as medications that counter act the symptoms of chemotherapy. Your doctor can often help you to overcome many of the symptoms and side effects you have from the chemotherapy drugs you need to take.

Chemotherapy hair loss, as well as other side effects can often be treated, or counteracted by other medications. For example, one of the largest risks you will face in these drug treatments is the drop in your body’s ability to fight off infection. Your doctor is likely to be very concerned about this because of the body’s weakened state. Therefore, this often means that you will be given medications that will boost your immune system and will help to keep your body at bay for infections. There are counteracting types of treatments readily available for many of the conditions you face.

Even though there are medications that are able to help with the side effects of chemotherapy, these side effects can still be very harsh. There are some things that everyone should know about side effects of chemotherapy. First, not everyone will have side effects. Additionally, the types and the degree of severity will range from one person to the next. Your doctor can help you with those side effects that really are troublesome to you. More so, most people do not have any long term side effects from chemotherapy. These factors can show just how important it is to talk to your doctor about chemotherapy treatment.
