Treatment for Cancer and Chemotherapy

Cancer chemotherapy is a method of curing the disease of cancer.  There are several different ways that doctors treat cancer, but chemotherapy is one of the most common of those methods.  That is because in the wide range of different types of chemotherapy that is found in the body, it becomes necessary for doctors to find some type of method of stopping the cells from growing, dividing and therefore spreading.  Chemotherapy treatments work to accomplish this goal very well.

Understanding what chemotherapy is happens to be very important for any patient that may be going through this process.  What is chemotherapy?  The words themselves actually mean “drug treatment” which sounds very vague.  In truth, it is a method of treating cancer in which the medications and procedure will kill cells with a cytotoxic drug.  These drugs may be a combination of other drugs, or they may just be one drug.  There are many drugs that are used in this manner (currently 70 of them) that can be very helpful in fighting off cancer growth.    Doctors will determine the best drug choice for you, based on a number of factors.

Those factors include the type of cancer that you have as well as the location of the cancer in your body (usually the location where the cancer was first found.)  Additionally, doctors must take into consideration the cancer cells themselves and often need to study them to be sure of their overall effect.  Added to this is the fact that doctors must consider if the cancer has spread or is likely to spread.  All of these factors together must be considered for doctors to make the decision on which chemotherapy drugs can be used in your body for your specific needs.

From this point, cancer chemotherapy enters the realm of how the chemotherapy is used.  There are several options here, too, that doctors will select from.  It can be done in addition to other treatments including radiotherapy, through surgery, biological therapy as well as hormone therapy.  To treat cancer, your doctor may need to employ several of these methods to get the end results that you should have.  Sometimes, patients will need an additional dosage of the drug used in chemotherapy.  This is called a high dose of chemotherapy.  In this situation, a drip infusion is given to you of stem cells afterwards to provide your body with necessary resources it may lose in the chemotherapy process.

Chemotherapy treatment is used in various types of cancer.  It is often directed at the specific location where the cancer has been found.  For example, it may be used for as breast cancer chemotherapy and in these situations, the chemotherapy drugs and methods are concentrated on the breast region because this is wehre the cancer has been found.  There is no doubt that chemotherapy treatments must be tailored to the individual themselves, which often sets you up for questions and a trial and error period where doctors are unsure about what methods for treating cancer will work for you.

Cancer chemotherapy is a very harsh sentence.  Although the cancer can be wiped out by this type of treatment when effective, there are many harsh side effects and prolonged effects that you will need to work through and sometimes live with.  The least of these is chemotherapy nausea which really can be one of the worst experiences that you have.  As you work with your doctor to determine the best course of action for treating your disease, take some time to learn about the medications included in chemotherapy.  You may be surprised by the fact that you can overcome this cancer through the use of such medications.

Stem Cell Treatments and High Dose

This is a process by which doctors use very high amounts of chemotherapy in the hope of trying to bring cancer cells in line and destroy them.  As cancer spreads through various areas of the body, it becomes very important for doctors to target those areas to insure that the disease does not spread further.  Some cancers are harder to fight and sometimes standard methods of using chemotherapy are not able to work well.  If your doctor recommends high dose chemotherapy with bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation, this is perhaps an aggressive way to fight the condition.

Why It Is Difficult?

All types of cancer chemotherapy do cause a number of side effects.  Some patients will face more than others.  The level of intensity of those drug interactions with your body can be varied as well.  Yet, with high doses of chemotherapy, in this manner, the effects of chemotherapy are often much more monumental.  Yet, there are more risks to be had and doctors must weigh the good effects against the risks that need to be taken to get to that point.  Ask your doctor to tell you more about how this is happening.

In high dose chemotherapy, or sometimes radiation therapy, the effect of the chemotherapy treatment is essential.  In this process, not only does the chemotherapy method kill off the cancer cells, but it can also kill the blood making stem cells in your body’s bone marrow.  When this happens, the body’s white blood cell count is drastically lowered; in turn this can lead to the easy susceptibility of patients to contract severe infections.  Sometimes, these infections can be fatal.  Additionally, the process causes people to bleed easily which can also be fatal to the patient.

Doctors have developed a method to overcome these risks with high dose chemotherapy.  They will first remove some of the stem cells from the patient’s body, usually from the peripheral blood (which is the blood circulating through your body) or from the bone marrow itself.  Then, they will administer the high dose chemotherapy treatment.  Once that process has been done and the chemotherapy is running its course, doctors will then return the stem cells back into the body through your veins.  The cells naturally find their way into the bone marrow and then reestablish their existence there.  When this happens, the body is able to get back to making new blood cells to replenish those lost through chemotherapy.

Unfortunately, there is still a lot of research that needs to be done on high dose chemotherapy.  Doctors are not sure why some cancers do not react any better to this method than to others.  More so, some cancers seem to be unaffected by the high doses even with the application of stem cells afterwards.  Additionally troubling for many patients is the fact that this procedure will lead to advanced complications in terms of side effects.  They may find that extremes are faced which are painful and often debilitating for some time.

As with all chemotherapy treatments, this treatment is one option that doctors have.  It is only used in the most advanced cases of cancer and often only when there is no other medication method to improve the situation.  It does not always help and should not be considered in some situations because of the additional risks placed on the patient.

Talk to your doctor about high dose chemotherapy if you are suffering from advanced stages of cancer.  In some situations, there is hope in improving the condition in this manner.  Still, doctors are likely to need more research before they can use this method readily.

Options Doctors Have for Lung Cancer

Lung cancer chemotherapy is often administered to patients that are suffering from any stage of lung cancer.  As one of the deadliest forms of cancer, and the leading cancer death causing type, it is always important for doctors to be given as much of an opportunity to treat the condition as possible.

Chemotherapy is a method of getting rid of the cancer cells from within the body that are dividing and growing there.  There are several different methods of fighting cancer in the lungs including a wide range of chemotherapy options made up of a variety of drugs.  Your doctor will determine which the best option for your condition is.

Most of the time, doctors will treat lung cancer first through surgery, whenever possible.  This method will allow the doctors to remove any tissue from the lung that has been infected with cancer, therefore removing the cancer from the body.  This type of surgery can only be done at certain stages of lung cancer because of the risks.  The surgery’s goal is to remove the cancerous tumor growth found in the lungs.  Some tumors, though, can not be removed through surgery.  Often it is because of the size of the tumor or its location that makes it impossible to remove.

Doctors may then pursue other methods of killing the cancer cells including radiation therapy.  This is a form of x-ray energy at a very high level that is used directly onto the cancer cells.  It will kill them.  Most often, it is done alongside other treatments including surgery and chemotherapy.  This method is helpful at relieving pain as well as removing anything blocking your airways.  Doctors often couple this treatment option with that of chemotherapy because together they have a larger opportunity of getting rid of the cancer cells.

Lung cancer chemotherapy is almost always used even when surgery and radiation therapy are used as well.  Chemotherapy is simply a term that is used to refer to the many different types of cancer fighting drugs that are administered to you.  Most often, these drugs will be injected into the body through a vein or sometimes they will be given through a catheter.  This is a tube that is placed into a large vein in your body and is kept there until it is no longer needed.  Some forms of chemotherapy drugs can be taken as a pill, but this is not always an option because some medications simply will not work in this manner.

When lung cancer chemotherapy is administered, patients often will feel some side effects due to the body’s ability to deal with the medications.  Because there are different types of chemotherapy available, doctors will need to choose the right one.  Each type has its own set of chemotherapy side effects that you could face, though some patients do not have any.

Doctors will work on providing you with the highest quality of medications available to fight your lung cancer.  Unfortunately, it may be that those amounts of limited in what they can do for you because of the type of the stage of cancer that you have.  Lung cancer does spread quickly.  Sometimes doctors will take advantage of high dose chemotherapy which uses a large amount of drugs that can do serious damage to your body in turn.

Talk with your doctor about your risk factors as well as your likelihood of getting rid of cancer.  Through the use of medications like these, stopping cancer from continuing is possible.  The highest rate of success is for patients that have early detection.  Therefore, if you could be suffering, seek out help as soon as possible.
