What Is Chemotherapy?

Basics of Chemotherapy

Asking what is chemotherapy means that perhaps your doctor has told you, or someone you know, that this is the best treatment for cancer available to you.  Chemotherapy is often used alone to treat cancer but it can also be used with the help of other treatments including cancer surgery or hormonal therapy. In short, chemotherapy is a medication, or a combination of medications, that is used to kill off cancer cells in your body.  What is important to point out is that this type of treatment for cancer is very effective at what it does.

Types of Chemotherapy

There are many types of chemotherapy today that could be playing a role in your overall health and well being.  If you are taking any type of chemotherapy treatment, chances are you have a combination of different drugs working for you.  Depending on the type of cancer, the location of the cancer and your overall well being, doctors can choose the most appropriate way to give you the treatment of chemotherapy.  This can be done through the blood intravenously or it can be done through pills that you are told to take.  In all cases, the goal is to get to the cancer cells.

Chemotherapy drugs work by killing off any cells within your body that are dividing.  Division of cells if very common; especially when you are growing.  That is how you grow and how you change as a child.  Yet, it is also the case that when you get older, the amount of dividing that your cells do is much lower.  In fact, they really only divide when they need to be repaired.  In that case, then, it becomes easier for the chemotherapy treatment to target those cells that are dividing because cancer cells do so at an increased pace.  In turn, more often than not, most of the cancer cells are killed by the chemotherapy treatment.

Cancer lumps are caused by the amount of growing and dividing that cancer cells do.  These cells divide so much so that they compound quickly and form a number of masses of tissue within your body.  Yet, what is essential here is that the rest of your body’s cells do not divide like this.  While any cells in your body that are in the mode of dividing will be hurt, damaged or destroyed by chemotherapy, it is also the case that those that do this will be able to repair the damage.  This is another advantage the normal cells have over cancer cells.  They are able to repair the damage don by chemotherapy treatments.  In short, cancer cells can not accomplish this and therefore are killed off.

If you are facing cancer of any type, it is important to talk to your doctor about your chances of killing off the cancer completely.  Unfortunately, not all cases of cancer can be treated with chemotherapy methods.  In some cases, the tumor or the larger growth is likely to be too large or in the wrong place and therefore can not be removed as easily.  Whenever possible, doctors do work to improve the quality of your care by tailoring the chemotherapy treatment to the right drugs and treatment methods.

Chemotherapy is a helpful tool that provides the body with the best method of destroying cells that are cancerous within it.  It is never easy for patients to go through cancer treatment of chemotherapy because the side effects can be immense.  Nevertheless, it is one of the most beneficial ways to overcome cancer and all the growth that is has.  Doctors are able to target specific areas to help improve your chances of reducing side effects.
